The boardwalk atop Maungawhau/Mount Eden has transformed the visitor experience, allowing over a million annual visitors to explore the crater rim without harming the delicate environment. To address this, the Tūpuna Maunga Authority partnered with Isthmus, Stellar Projects, and HEB Construction to create a sustainable, non-invasive boardwalk using StopDigging’s ground screws, offering an environmentally friendly alternative to concrete footings.
Mountain boardwalk project
Case study NZ:
Previously, heavy foot traffic caused severe erosion, threatening the volcanic site’s geological and cultural heritage.
The challenges
Preventing erosion and restoring damaged tracks.
Preserving cultural and historical significance.
Minimising ground disturbance while ensuring visitor safety.
Creating a durable, low-impact foundation that blends into the natural environment.
The solutions
Using ground screws for the foundation allowed the modular, steel-framed boardwalks to “float” above the landscape, reducing site impact and allowing for future removal or adaptation. Apart from that, there were several benefits of using ground screws for this project:
- Enhanced visitor experience – Safer access without contributing to erosion.
- Environmental & cultural protection – A design that respects the site’s sacred significance.
- Long-term sustainability – Durable, recyclable materials ensure minimal long-term impact.
A sacred landscape, not to be touched. Built to float above the whenua, this design protects the maunga’s spirit, history, and fragile ground.
“It was an opportunity to be minimal with materiality and reduce the structure’s footprint. The whole team rose to the challenge, and great collaboration led to a great outcome.”
Nada Stanish, Lead Designer at Isthmus
The result
Since its completion, the boardwalk has preserved Maungawhau’s integrity and supported its bid for UNESCO World Heritage status. Future improvements include narrowing summit paths, pedestrianising access roads, and adding more viewing platforms—ensuring generations experience this cultural landmark while protecting its natural beauty.
Complex. Sacred. Collaborative. Every decision was shaped by respect — when we build with care, everyone wins.
